Leadership In Training Course Outline.

Part 1 – Leadership & Personal Development

This is a lesson time where the LIT’s will learn the different types of leadership as well as discover their own abilities, and learn how to use them in a camp setting.  The LIT’s will learn how to use general counseling information in working with children. This time will help prepare the LIT’s for a time when they may be a CIT, camp counselor, or another leadership role.

Part 2 – Teaching & Activity Skills
In this section the LIT’s will learn how to be a leader, the different styles of leaders, and effective teaching methods.  LIT’s will learn basic training in the different camp activities skills Frontier Trails Camp offers, such as:  Horseback Riding, Archery, Canoeing, Kayaking, Games, etc.  This will allow each participant to gain as many skills as possible in the activities of camp to further their skill base.

Part 3 - Devotion & Preperation time
This will be a time where the LIT’s will work on their assignments and complete them. The LIT Director will have study times together with the LIT’S.  Some of the topics that will be covered are leadership examples from the Old Testament and from Jesus.  Servant hood, the art of listening, perseverance, etc.  These creative studies in the Bible will give a deeper understanding of the Christian Faith.

Part 4 – Operations of a Camping Facility
The LIT’s will learn and carry out general principles of the daily operations at a Camping Facility.  We believe this will allow the LIT’s to understand the greater picture of leadership.  It will be carried out in the Food Service, Site development, Facility maintenance, and Housekeeping. This will help them learn team work, community, consistency, work ethics, loyalty, completion of tasks and trustworthiness etc. (qualities need for working with kids later)

Part 5 – Evaluation
LIT’s will have an informal mid course evaluation to be encouraged, as well as to determine areas for improvement for the remainder of the course.  There will be a formal evaluation at the end of the course.  This will encompass the entire 4-week period of the course, and is designed as a tool to help the LIT’s to reach their potential in leadership positions.

**LIT’s who successfully complete their course will be awarded a certificate of completion from Frontier Trails Camp.
** Please Note that the LIT course is a great opportunity for those who are planning on applying for future camp employment, either at Frontier Trails Camp or elsewhere.

**We encourage additional training and certification (NLS, ORCA,CHA,FIRST AID) throughout the School Year, to increase opportunities for employment at Summer Camps.  Most positions at camp require certifications, so the more qualifications you have, the greater opportunities you have for employment.

* Former campers are given first priority for the LIT course, but this does not ensure automatic employment at Frontier Trails Camp.  We certainly do consider your applications ahead of other applicants if you have the same qualifications and our hiring panel feels applicant would be suitable for said job.
